For San Pedro tea I finally found a method that really works. To really get the mescaline out without ruining it or burning it (Makes it taste gross) you need to make sure of a few things.
Freshly watered cactus tastes better. Dry cactus may be stronger, but its not worth it if it tastes so bad you cant get it down. Fresh cactus grown in good conditions actually tastes good enough to eat, like cucumber with a hint of aspirin but slimy. Gross cactus tastes like nothing you have ever experienced and it makes you want to gag. Some irritation of the cactus is good though. If you scratch it or stress it then it will produce more chemicals as a defense against predators.
First of all forget the vitamin C. I havnt noticed it ever helping, and it makes it taste more vile than it already is.
You dont want to over heat the first round. There are heat sensitive chemicals that are psychoactive that you dont want to loose besides mescaline. The second or third rounds you can cook at higher temperatures than recombine fluids.
First you need to get your cactus....Many people like to peel the cactus skin off. This can be easy or hard depending on the cactus. You do not want to lose the dark green matter though, so dont peel the flesh off with the skin....thats the best part.
Next you need to place it in the freezer. Its really important to break the cell walls, and this doesnt happen as easily by regular low temperature cooking....drying is another method of breaking the cell walls before the first cooking, but this will result in a loss of potency. Freezing is the better method. Once you thaw it out it will turn into a semi liquid goop (because you just broke the cell walls).
Next you blend your goop into paste....if the cactus is young the inner core will be soft enough to blend....if its old it will have hard root like fibers that you might not want to blend up. In this case you can cut away the outer flesh and just carve out some of the inner core to add to the mixture avoiding the fibrous parts....some people advocate only using the dark green flesh under the skin, but the rest of the catus has psychoactive properties also, besides mescaline even, so I feel thats a waste and is disrespectful to the cactus.
Now you place your goop into a pot of water....non reactive metals are best. I never cook with aluminum. Glass pots are excellent, but steel is ok. Add some water to this already liquidy goop. This first boiling you want to simmer at low temperature....no big bubbles, just hot like freshly brewed tea temperatures, too hot to drink but not boiling over. Dont add too much water, just enough to keep it liquid. add more if it gets too thick because you absolutely dont want to burn it.
Next, about half an hour later or so after it gets hot (Not counting the time it takes to warm), you should use a fine strainer, probably steel mesh (not pasta strainer) and pour out this first low temperature extract and pour it into another container (With room for 2 or three more extracts).
Next put the pulp back into the pot. It should still be green with lots left to extract. This time add a bit more water or a lot more and boil it at the highest temperature setting. Cook this liquid down until its nice and thick and syrupy.. Strain the pulp and add the liquid to the low temperature extract. Repeat this step 1 or 2 more times.
Now if you have too much liquid and it doesnt taste good, you can evaporate it slowly at low temperature....but you dont want to boil it. This might take a while since you dont want to destroy the heat sensitive chemicals.
Now you drink it. This can produce a powerful experience on par with anything you could find in pill form.
If you have very little cactus or a weak cactus you can try mixing in some Caapi vine which is an MAOI.....however, this can be dangerous if you take too much. It makes it maybe 10x stronger. Try it without it first, and only use Caapi if you are familiar with the potency of the specific strain of cactus, how it affects you, and are positive you want to take it to the next level....and only use a fraction of what you usually would use.
